While a lot of us will be isolating and working from home in the coming weeks, it is the perfect time to start planning simple renovation work and update your home. An opportunity to stay busy after work and during the weekend with the newfound free time.
I have made a selection of must-have to kick start your home projects from painting furniture to creative DIY projects. (All the products needed for these DIY’s can be easily bought online as non-essential shops are now closed).
1- Update your furniture with Annie Sloan chalk paints
Why not use this extra time to add a lick of paint to an old piece of furniture? Like I did to my desk chair at my parents’ house. Adding a bit of colour can give your furniture a new lease of life and make your room feel more fun.
Using Annie Sloan chalk paint will make the DIY even quicker than using other paint brands. The invention of Chalk Paint® resulted from a need for a paint which could be used to achieve myriad decorative effects – but that could be applied, left to dry, and waxed in one day.
2 – DIY Hanging planter wall
Are you looking to bring an element of nature into your home, but only have limited space? A creative approach to this would be installing a planter feature wall in your home. This versatile feature can be used for a variety of reasons, such as a way to display herbs in your kitchen area or a wellness corner in your home office.
Not only does this planter look awesome, but it is also simple to make.
You will need:
- A flat wire memo board
- Wooden crates (we used three)
- House plants in sealed pots to prevent leakage
- One roll of tan or fake leather with a thickness of 5cm
- Six leather screw brass rivets
- A utility knife

3 – DIY colour block coasters
If you’re looking to try out colour blocking without going big and dressing up your walls, coasters make a great start. They add small pops of colour and texture to your coffee table, and they’re simple to make and personalise – think of it as styling this trend on your own terms.
When it comes to the colours, you’ve got options too! Go with neutral hues for a cool, tonal effect or opt for something bright and colourful if you want even more visual impact.
For this DIY, you will need:
- Masking Tape
- Sponges
- Acrylic paint (minimum of 2 colours)
- Plain wooden coasters

4 – DIY Wall-mounted easel
Give your kids an excuse to write on the walls with this next clever DIY. This paper easel is attached to the wall and will provide your children with hours of fun. Once they have got bored of it, you can use it as a memo board or a way to keep your grocery list in plain sight.
You will need:
- A curtain rod system (like this one)
- Rolls of brown Kraft paper
- 1 strip of thin wood
- Black spray paint for the wood (optional)
- Drill

5 – DIY cane rattan storage boxes
These cute little rattan boxes are not only beautiful, but they are also practical. As you probably know by now, cane rattan is very on-trend right now, so this DIY is perfect for your home. The tutorial linked below features instructions for round boxes, but feel free to choose boxes that are any shape you like. I think it would be cool to use black boxes so you can see some black behind the rattan.
If you’re currently working from home, why not use these boxes to store your stationery, paperwork or essential snacks!
For this DIY, you will need:
- cane rattan sheets
- Small round boxes
- Spray Bottle
- Wood glue and paint brush
- Clothes pegs
