Last year, we witnessed the rise of marble as a major interior design trend. It seemed no matter where we looked marble was there, whether in faux or real finishes. In 2018, that is all set to change. Let your home get speckled with terrazzo this year. The flat yet complex texture from the 70s looks oh so cool and modern mixed into your furniture and decor.

By some accounts, terrazzo (Italian for “terrace”) dates back 8,000 years, to the Venetians. As a cost-cutting measure, construction workers would take smashed marble chips and set them in clay—rather than outfitting an entire floor in the pricey marble. In more recent history, terrazzo saw a huge surge in popularity in the American 1970s, when thin-set terrazzo (resin rather than cement) was invented before quickly falling back out of style by the end of the decade.

It’s versatility is key to it’s success — terrazzo, whether styled in an understated monochromatic fashion or an en vogue pastel iteration, complements a variety of home decor styles — whether minimalist or maximalist.

Most commonly seen on tiles, this ancient material is now making its way into furniture, like side tables, and providing inspiration for accessories such as planters and rugs. You can even find Terrazzo wall murals, so you can get the look for less! I used Murals Wallpaper’s Terrazzo mural in my Final Major project last year!

If you wish to add Terrazzo to your home, it is best to start small – seek out a terrazzo vase, or a terrazzo slab for displaying all your jewellery on. If it works for you, you can go bigger. If not, you can keep it toned down. If it’s anything like the marble trend, it’s about to be everywhere!

Terrazzo is beautiful, nostalgic and it’s anything but boring. What’s more? It’s also practical. Cheers to seeing more of this material over the next year.
I have designed a Terrazzo style print that is available on a variety of household items. If you would like to buy them, please click here.

I’m definitely going to look and see if I can pick myself up a terrazzo vase because I have just fallen in love with this! That first picture with the terrazzo kitchen worktop is so beautiful, I would for sure have that in my house!

This is such a cool look! I don’t think I’d personally add it into my home as I’m totally neutral and boring in my interior tastes, but it is absolutely beautiful, I’d love to stay in a hotel or something which had this kind of look!- https://sophiehearts.net x
This is really pretty! I especially love the staircase. It adds an interesting feature to a room and very creative too! 💖 xx
