How To Choose The Perfect Dining Chairs For Your Home

When it comes to choosing dining chairs for the table in your kitchen or dining room, there are a number of things that you should consider. What chairs will best suit the style of the room? Do you want to change the style of your room completely? Should you only have one chair style or should you mix and match?

Below, I have listed a few different design styles to help you work out which style you currently use in your home so you can determine which dining chairs to chose. For each design style, I have created a product board which features 8 dining chairs that work within that style.

Scandinavian

An ideal Scandinavian interior stems from a focus on functionality, pragmatism and clean, minimal aesthetic. This design style is most characterized by an elegant and sophisticated look which has a modern yet minimal overall feel.

Scandinavian design is characterised by wood, but not just any wood will do. In keeping with their light theme, the woods used in Scandinavian design are usually light woods, like beech, ash, and pine. Modern shapes including clean lines and soft curves are a defining feature of the Scandinavian design style.

Industrial

Industrial design is about adding a raw, unfinished look to the most thoughtfully designed homes. It’s about selecting pieces that are as much about style as function. If you have an interior with exposed brick walls or concrete accents, Industrial style furniture will work really nicely. A plethora of wood and metal surfaces can be found in industrial-style interiors. It’s no wonder that earth tones and neutrals are popular colour choices for these spaces.

Leather chairs work especially well within Industrial dining rooms. I personally love the idea of pairing tan leather chairs with a wooden table with iron legs. Hairpin legs are a key trend in Industrial furniture, you can see an example of hairpin legs chair 2 below. The industrial trend can feel quite informal, so mixing and matching different chairs adds a bit of interest.

Bohemian

Over the past few years, the bohemian style has become a worldwide trend. It’s hard to walk through a furniture shop without seeing rattan furniture and macrame accessories! Boho interiors tend to contain a mix of patterns, natural textures and cultural influences from different parts of the globe.

When considering dining chairs, look for chairs made of rattan or woven in some way. These organic materials and shapes are key. Bohemian and Scandi styles have a slight overlap so Scandi style chairs can work very nicely in bohemian interiors. For example, I have used Danish wishbone chairs as they have a rattan seat and an organic frame.

Mid Century

This style grew in America based on earlier styles such as Bauhaus which began in Germany, and the International style, which grew from the Bauhaus style in America. There was a liberal use of traditional material, such as wood, and non-traditional materials such as metal, glass, vinyl, plywood and Plexiglass.

You will find that Mid Century furniture often features uncluttered and sleek lines with both organic and geometric forms. Circles and curves are prominent in this design style and can be seen in a number of dining chairs today. Walnut wood and Colours such as teal, burnt orange and yellow were very on trend during this era, so expect these colours to feature in retro dining chairs.

Luxury

Luxury interiors often include metallic finishes such as brass, platinum and silver to ensure that the dining space is both opulent and inviting. Sumptuous fabrics, such as velvet, can help to soften the space and add a feminine touch.

When looking for luxury dining chairs consider velvet upholstery in a rich jewel tone as they create a real statement! Another tip is to look for chairs with rich dark wooden legs or brass/chrome/platinum legs or plinths as these will add to the opulence. There are many chairs like this on the market that look the part but won’t break the bank.
