Introducing the Dulux colour of the year for 2020, Tranquil Dawn. The delicate shade is somewhere between sage and mint and is subtle enough to use in any room in your home. Inspired by the morning sky, this cool-tone shade of green is a nod towards an “increasingly hectic and digital” modern society.
‘A new decade heralds a new dawn and the hazy pale green tones of Tranquil Dawn are calming and comforting just when we need it most in our lives,’ says Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director, Dulux UK.
Pair with neutral pastels for a laid back look or opt for rich jewels for an empowering setting. I have chosen a variety of products that will help you create a serene and calming space. So steer away from the chaos and dive into a sense of tranquility.
The colour of the Year 2020 has four supporting trend palettes which capture the essence of being human and show how Tranquil Dawn™ can be used to create spaces that enhance what we need and want in the year ahead: to seek Meaning, to Care, to Play, and to encourage Creativity.
“Against a background of increasing technological power, we want to understand our place in society and how we can make a positive impact on it. We need a fresh purpose, to be the architects of our own future and we are asking searching questions of both ourselves and society.”
Heleen Van Gent, Head of AkzoNobel’s Global Aesthetic Centre
Here is the first complementary colour palette that Dulux has released.
THE MEANING PALETTE – A HOME FOR MEANING
Inspired by a cold winter’s dawn, this minimalist palette features icy green, warm cream and charcoal hues, creating a feeling of calm and contemplation. It’s the perfect frosty winter palette.
Dulux says this wonderful shade can help to create a soothing place to think and a relaxing place to sleep. With this in mind, how will you decorate with Tranquil Dream?
To give you a hand, I’ve created a product board with a range of products in case you aren’t quite brave enough to paint your walls. Or you are renting and can’t paint!
- Semaphore Hunley tiles – Claybrook
- Corduroy table lamp – Cuckooland
- Mini Metro duck egg wall tiles – Tons of tiles
- Oro pendant drum lamp shade, sage and copper – Made.com
- Evelyn sage green patterned cushion – Habitat
- Bellini cocktail chair – Loaf

Do you think it is a good choice for colour of the year 2020? I personally love the shade but think it’s a little bland compared to Dulux’s Spiced Honey and Pantone’s Living Coral – both of which are colours of the year for 2019.
